He was 79. Interment was in the Prairie Grove Cemetery north of Hamburg, Ark, with the Rev. Jack Midyett, pastor of the First Methodist Chruch, Bastrop, officiating. Chavis died at a local clinic January 1 following a three-weeks illness. He had been prominently identified with the livestock industry in the parish for the past 33 years, having moved into Morehouse Parish in 1917. He is survived by two sons, Thomas L. of Shreveport and James L. of Mer Rouge, two daughters, Mrs. W.C. Hurst and Mrs. Barr Perry, both of Bastrop. Three sisters, Mrs. Joe Chadwick and Mrs. Pearl Bozeman, both of Hamburg, Arkansas, and Mrs. Ann Atkins and Mrs. Lucy L. Graves, both of Fountain Hill, Arkansas, and one brother, Edward Chavis also of Fountain Hill survive. Pallbearers for the funeral serviecs were Jack Tyler, George H. Goodwin, H. Hugh Spier, Eugene Johnson, A.B. Calhoun Jr., and Elmer Stanfield.
