BASTROP, LOUISIANA

Funeral services for Mr. James Coley will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, September 
18, 2024 at the Chapel of Cox Funeral Home with Bro. Alan Eppinette officiating.   
A time of visitation for family and friends will begin at 10:00 AM Wednesday 
until time for services at the funeral home.   



James Hewitt Coley was born at Zion Hill, Mississippi on August 4, 1929 to the 
late Edgar Coley and Lucey Whittington Coley.  Mr. Coley passed away peacefully 
at his home in Bastrop on the morning of September 17, 2024. Along with his 
parents, he is preceded in death by two wives, Geraldine Malone Coley and Evelyn 
Cross Coley;  a brother Pat Coley; five sisters, Yvonne Chapman, Lucille Martin, 
Hazel Nowlin, Edress Grubbs, and Wilma Fleming; and a step-daughter Cindy 
Joyner.   



Mr. Coley was a retired clerk with International Paper Company.   Although he 
retired from a regular 9 to 5 job he never quit staying busy.  His hobby was 
working and staying busy around the house, his yard, or around his camp.  He did 
not believe in idle time but always took pleasure in remaining active.  When he 
did decide to take a break and relax he could be found enjoying  spending time 
at his camp on the Ouachita River.  



James is survived by his wife of 30 years, Sally Higdon Coley;  a daughter 
Gloria Bonner;  step-children Max Grubbs and his wife Ashley, and Kelli Grubbs; 
a sister, Margie Hillis; a brother Thurman Coley; numerous grandchildren and 
great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
