Dr. Garrett was born Sept. 17, 1927, in Monroe, La., to Judge David Isaiah and Lessie Madison Garrett. He graduated from Ouachita High School. He completed pre-med requirements at Tulane University in New Orleans and graduated from the University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis, Tenn., in 1949. He interned at Charity Hospital at Louisiana at New Orleans. After graduation from the University of Tennessee Medical School, Dr. Garrett became the youngest practicing MD in the United States, at that time, being only 21 years old. Dr. Garrett also graduated from the U.S. Naval School of Aviation Medicine and while on assigned duty at the U.S. Air Station in Memphis, he assisted the United States Public Health Service in an on-going polio evaluation and management program. He served the U.S. Navy as Flight Surgeon and Senior United States Naval Medical Officer aboard the Aircraft Carrier Essex during the Korean War. He was active in the Naval Reserve after active duty and retired as a Captain after 45 years of service. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal. He has served as past president of the Morehouse Parish Medical Society, Chief of Staff of Morehouse General Hospital, Coroner of Morehouse Parish, Director of the Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians, Medical Director of Morehouse Parish branch of the American Heart Association. Dr. Garrett was a supporter of the Boy and Girl Scouts of America, The Nursing Scholarship Fund, the Bastrop Chamber of Commerce, a sponsor of the American Legion Boys and Girls State, and numerous other local charitable organizations and activities in Morehouse Parish. He is a member of the American Legion, La Societe Des 40 Hommes et 8 (Forty and Eight), Charter Fellow of Family Physicians, American Medical Association, Southern Medical Association, Louisiana State Medical Society, Association of Military Surgeons, Association of Aviation Medicine, Association of Aerospace Medicine, The Retired Officers Association, The Reserve Officers Association. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the Morehouse Parish Shrine Club and Barak Temple and the Jesters. Dr. Garrett was selected as the 1998 Family Doctor of the Year by the Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Flood Garrett has been practicing family medicine in Bastrop since 1954. Dr. Garrett was known best for his love and compassion towards his fellow man regardless of a person's economic status, race or creed. His Christianity was shown by the life that he lived in caring for others. Dr. Garrett was predeceased by his father and mother, Judge David Isaiah and Lessie Garrett, and a brother, David I. Garrett Jr. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Stephens Farrell Garrett; two sons, Henry Flood Madison (Matt) Garrett and his wife Sherry of Granby, Connecticut, and Jason Charles Farrell and wife Shelley of Jackson, Miss.; a daughter, Carre Elizabeth (Beth) Nesheim and her husband Eric of Manassas, Virginia; two granddaughters, Corre Katherine Nesheim and Tiffany Ashtyn Farrell; and a very special friend, Edward Earl (Rob) Vanderford. Funeral services are slated for Wednesday, Aug. 15, at 2 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church in Bastrop with the Rev. Herman Ogea and the Rev. Katherine Doherty-Ogea officiating. Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Golden Funeral Home in Bastrop. Interment will be at Christ Church Cemetery in Bastrop. Pallbearers will be C.E. Snyder, Don Yeldell, Frank Messinger, Goodwin Gladney, Jim Benbrook, Van Lee, Rob Vanderford and Ross Downs. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Morehouse Parish Shrine Club, The Jesters, Medical Staff of Morehouse General Hospital, Fred Landry and Babe Spann.
