Funeral services for Mr. Eddie Newton "Slick" Hayes will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 10, 2010 at the Chapel of Cox Funeral Home of Bastrop with the Reverend Scott Petrus officiating. Interment will follow at Causey Cemetery under the direction of Cox Funeral Home. Visitation with the family will be held Friday, July 9th, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Eddie Newton "Slick" Hayes was born February 19, 1933 in Bastrop to the late Eddie Mallory Hayes and Rachel Morgan Hayes. He passed away Wednesday July 7, 2010 in Bastrop. He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John Lee Hayes and James Hayes; and two sisters, Avarie Brown and Maude Burgess. Mr. Hayes was a member of the Riverside Baptitst Church and a retired mechanic with International Paper Company. He was a graduate of Bastrop High School and a veteran of the United States Navy having served during the Korean Conflict. An avid fisherman, Mr. Hayes enjoyed every oppurtunity to wet a hook and go fishing for white perch. A respected craftsman of harmony wind chimes many people are fortunate to enjoy the sound of the beautiful chimes he created. Mr. Hayes is survived by his wife, Josephine Harper Hayes of Bastrop; his three children, David Newton Hayes and wife, Andrea of Bastrop, Rodney Wade Hayes and his wife, Angela of Harvey, Louisiana and Karen Hayes Oliver of Bastrop; four grandchildren, April Johnson and her husband, Nickalaus, Laura Carney and her husband, Dennis, all of Bastrop, Stephen Hayes of Harvey, Louisiana, and Leo Oliver of Bastrop; and a brother, Devon Hayes and his wife, Patricia of Bastrop. Serving as pallbearers are Stephen Hayes, Leo Oliver, Nickalaus Johnson, Dennis Carney, Jared Merritt, and Robert Harris. Honorary pallbearers are Ronnie Harper, Jim Merritt, Jimmy Smith, Mike Arrant, Dr. Carter Cox, John Montgomery, and Wilton Halterman.
