He was born in Morehead City, North Carolina on August 3, 1950 to Ray and Sally Highsmith. Richard held two degrees from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, one in English and one in Political Science. He and his wife Ellen Martin Highsmith met and married in North Carolina but moved to her hometown of Bastrop where he graduated from ULM with a degree in Accounting. Richard worked in the area as a financial officer for many local businesses in the Monroe area including Bancroft Bag, Bancroft Paper, Coca Cola, and Donald, Tucker, Betts, and Allen. He and Ellen are parents to four sons: Richard and wife Angie of Cornelia, GA, and their children Katie Claire, Patrick, Allison, Becket, and Penelope; Jonathan and wife Margaret of San Antonio, TX, and their children Jacy, Haley, Jonathan, and Ethan; Christopher of Hernando, Mississippi, and his children Kaitlin, Alex, Sarah, and Connor; and William and Heather of Fayetteville, NC, and their daughter Gracie. Along with his children, Richard was especially close with a nephew, Patrick Martin of Baton Rouge. Visits and pictures of his many grandchildren brought great joy to his life during the 6 years of his infirmity. He is also survived by brothers Jimmy, Leslie, Ty, and Bobby Highsmith and a sister Elizabeth Highsmith Kelly. Richard is preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Sally Highsmith; brothers, Ray, Jr., Kenneth and Louis Highsmith, and a grandson Nicholas Tyler Highsmith. The family would like to acknowledge Lagniappe Nursing Home and the Morehouse Parish Library for their many kindnesses.
