Services for Earleene Dryer Nolan will be Monday, July 12, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Rabenhorst Funeral Home on Government St. in Baton Rouge with visitation before the services. Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, Baton Rouge. Earleene was born December 3, 1918 in Orange, Texas to Minnie Maude McCorquodale Dryer and Earl Dryer at the home of her grandmother, Mrs. Ida Dunn McCorquodale. She passed from her life on earth to glory on July 9, 2010 in Mer Rouge, Louisiana surrounded by her family and her devoted companion Dorothy Dukes. She spent her elementary school years in Louisiana and Texas as her family moved yearly with her father's work as a salesman. She graduated from Beaumont High School in 1933 at the age of 15 and entered Lamar Tech for her 1st year of college, Northeast Center (now ULM) for her 2nd year, and moved on to LSU to complete several degrees: 1938 BA, 1939 MA (English) and 1943 MS (Library Science), and completed 30 hours toward her Doctorate in Education through the years. In 1938, she met and married Robert Edward Nolan (now deceased), an Oak Ridge native, also a student at Louisiana State University. They subsequently had three children who also attended LSU: Betty Earle Nolan Clark (Bob Erle), Robert Edward Nolan, Jr., and Janice Maude Nolan. Earleene taught English at Bolton High School in 1944 and 1945 during World War II during which time she obtained her private pilot's license at England AFB in Alexandria, LA. She taught at Highland Elementary School in Baton Rouge through the 1940's and 50's until becoming principal at Southdowns Elementary School where she served for 26 years, watching many of Baton Rouge's leaders and professionals grow and mature. Earleene was involved in many educational organizations including Alpha Delta Kappa, President and Treasurer; Parent Teacher Association; Louisiana Teacher's Association, East Baton Rouge Branch; EBR Elementary Principal Association Secretary. She believed in advancing the cause of education at all levels as evidenced by her vision and her generous lifelong contributions. She believed that education was the key to a successful life; hence she established numerous scholarships for students through the LSU Alumni Association, Lamar University and ULM and endowed the Earleene Nolan Sanders Endowed Alumni Professorship at LSU. Earleene was listed in Community Leaders & Noteworthy Americans; Personalities of the South and Who's Who In Elementary School Principals. One of her proudest accomplishments was being a founding member of Baton Rouge Teachers Federal Credit Union, now Neighbors CU, where she served on the Board of Directors as Secretary for over 40 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Baton Rouge. In 1986, she married Lawrence M. Sanders (now deceased), also a Beaumont High graduate whom she became reacquaninted with at her 50th high school reunion many years after the death of her first husband. Her survivors include her three children, five grandchildren: Robert Nolan Clark(Jennifer), Amy Dryer Clark Ellender(Danny), Molly Clark Glath(Ray), Erle Mayo Clark(Miranda), and Melissa Nolan Phillips(Van) and 16 great- grandchildren. Her family will forever be indebted to her special caretakers, Dorothy Dukes, Linda Robbins, and Geneva Brandon, and the entire staff of Oak Woods Home for the Elderly for their care and support. Honored to serve as pallbearers are her grandsons and grandsons-in-law. Honorary pallbearers are her longtime friends, Arthur Gene Worley and Nelson Goings.
