Theodore James (T.J.) Parker, Sr., former mayor of Mer Rouge, passed away Saturday, July 7, 2012 at Oak Woods of Mer Rouge, Louisiana. A native of Mer Rouge, he was 87 years old. Funeral services will be held at the Mer Rouge Baptist Church on Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at 2:00pm. Services will be conducted by Reverend Reggie Kirkman and Vincent Baria. Interment with military honors will follow at the Mer Rouge Cemetery under the direction of Cox Funeral Home, Bastrop, Louisiana. Born December 26, 1924, T.J. was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean Conflict. After the war, he returned to Mer Rouge and left a legacy of service to his community for which he will forever be remembered. He was a Deacon in the Mer Rouge Baptist Church, President and Board of Directors of Oakwood Nursing Home, Past Master of St. Andrews Lodge, #256, member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Mer Rouge Lions Club, American Legion, Board of Directors of Bastrop-Morehouse Chamber of Commerce and Assistant Chief of the Mer Rouge Volunteer Fire Department. T.J. was the owner of Parker Chevrolet and served on the Board of the Chevrolet Factory Dealer Council. He was on the Board of Directors of Mer Rouge State Bank for over 40 years, and for over 37 years served on the Town Council and as Mayor of Mer Rouge. T.J.'s greatest joys in life were his faith, his family and his friends. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and a precious grandfather. He loved his friends and never met a stranger. His life was a testament to many through his faith in his Lord. Recently, T.J. and his wife, Mary Lou were honored by Wellspring Alliance as one of the outstanding families of Northeast Louisiana based on instilling values of integrity, determination, love and laughter in their own family and giving this back through services to the community. T.J. was preceded in death by his parents, Robert F. Parker and Gladys Cox Parker and his brother, Billy Parker. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Lou Womack Parker; daughters Pamela Parker Kirkman and her husband, Reggie and Cynthia Parker Baria Aycock and her husband, George; son, Ted J. Parker and his wife, Rhonda. Grandchildren, Vince Baria and wife Mary Brooke, Bonnie Baria Hall and husband Billy, Mary Kirkman Hassell and husband Richard, Emily Parker Cage and husband Shelby, Becky Kirkman Goehler and husband Brock, Amanda Parker Hogan and husband Jeremy and Millicent Parker Oldham and husband Tony. Great- grandchildren, Ben, John, Louisa, Hope and Daniel Baria; Anna Baria Hall, Victoria Domino and Scout Hogan; Reese and Rex Goehler, Parker Grace Hassell and Cort Cage. Brothers, William Hugh and Guy Parker and sisters, Roberteen Johnston and Carol Rogers, many nieces and nephews and T.J.'s special little 4 legged friend, Puddin'. Serving as pallbearers will be his grandsons and Dr. Carroll Dew, Lane Pipes, and Michael Alford. Honorary pallbearers will be the Board of Deacons of Mer Rouge Baptist Church, the Board of Directors of Oak Woods Home for the Elderly, the Board of Directors of the Mer Rouge State Bank, and past and present Town Councilmen.
