" Johnnie Wesley Pegues was born April 10, 1938 to the late Phil Pegues, Jr, and Laura Miles Pegues in Trenton, La. in Desoto Parish. He was the third child of seven children. He graduated from Desoto Parish Training School in Mansfield, La. After graduating from high school in 1956, he entered Southern University in Baton Rouge on a football scholarship where he excelled under Coach W. M. Mumford and was an outstanding player. He was named an All SWAC Conference Guard all four years of his college career. He received his Master's degree, plus 30 in 1972 from Northeast Louisiana University in Monroe, La. He was an active church member of St. Mary CME Temple and served as a Sunday school teacher, president of the Steward Board for many years, and a member of the Trustee Board. He was instrumental in the building of this present church structure as shown by his name inscribed on the cornerstone of the church building. He was also a trustee for the Louisiana Region of the Fourth Episcopal District. Pegues started his coaching and teaching career in Shreveport at Notre Dame Catholic High School where his football team won two state football championships and 28 games in football. He taught and coached track, tennis, and basketball at C. H. Iron High School in Benton, La. and in 1964 he coached the girls' basketball team to a State AA Championship. His tennis team was state runners-up. He was selected as head coach of the North-South All Star Game by the Pelican State Coaches Association and was regarded as one of the best and successful coaches in Louisiana. He was highly sought by several high schools. In 1965, he accepted the coaching position at Morehouse High School in Bastrop as head football coach and served there until the schools were integrated and he was transferred to Bastrop High School as an assistant football coach and head track coach. His educational experience included assistant principal at Mer Rouge Elementary School in Mer Rouge, and assistant principal at Bastrop Middle School. In 1992, he was inducted into the Southern University's Football Hall of Fame. He retired in 1996 after teaching and coaching for 36 years. However, as much as he loved coaching and teaching, his greatest joy came for helping his children and grandchildren become successful and productive members of their communities. All four children graduated from college and three have earned their Master's degree. When his youngest child (Alicia) job took her to South Africa, he went to visit her not once but twice! His oldest grandson, Jackie Carlton Skipper graduated from college in May 2007. Of course, he took a special delight in helping Carlton become an outstanding high school and college football player. In addition, when Carlton's begin coaching at Bastrop High in August of this year, he would often watch the team practice and "critique" his coaching. He died on Wednesday, December 26, 2007. His parents, a son, Bobby Charles Mims, and brother, Arthur James Pegues, preceded him in death. He leaves to cherish his precious memories, his beloved wife, Princess; four children, Angela Pegues (Mer Rouge), Anthony Tyrone Pegues and wife Gayla (Warner Robins, Ga.), Tony Pegues and wife Chandra (Beaumont, Texas) and Alicia Trenelle Pegues (Manila, Philippines); seven grandchildren, Jackie Carlton Skipper and wife Jineane (Bastrop), Tony Pegues II and Micah LeAnn Pegues (Beaumont, Texas), Alexander T.
