Smith Sr. Funeral services for Mr. Ray A. Smith Sr. will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 20, 2010 at the Chapel of Cox Funeral Home of Bastrop with the Rev. Douglas Edwards officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation with the family was held Friday, March 19 at Cox Funeral Home of Bastrop. Ray Allen Smith Sr. was born December 23, 1923 in Morehouse Parish to the late Byard E. "Doc" Smith and Lula Ozell Neighbors Smith and he died Thursday, March 18, 2010 at St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe. Mr. Smith, a retired automotive mechanic, was a member of the First Church of God of Bastrop for over sixty-four years, a graduate of Bonita High School and a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of forty years, Elyse Marie Hindmon Smith; and a sister, Bertha Mae Holland. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of twenty years, Peggy Pierce Smith of Bastrop; his son, Ray A. "Al" Smith Jr. and his wife Mary Rose Smith of Bastrop; grandson Chad Smith and his wife Dee Smith and their children, Elise, Cheyenne, and Hunter Smith; children by marriage, Soraya Cooper-Ward and her husband L.W. Ward Jr. of Bastrop, Lisa Johnson and her husband Michael Johnson of Bastrop, Theresa Priest and husband David Priest of Atlanta, Texas, Greg McDonald and his wife Crystal McDonald of Bastrop; two sisters, Debbie Couch and her husband Bro. Louis Couch of Bastrop, Lillie Pearl Carr and her husband Paul Carr of Milo, Ark.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his beloved dog, Dixie-Belle. Serving as pallbearers are Gary Doss, Billy Watkins, Gary Olin, L.W. Ward Jr., Michael Johnson, and Billy Banks. Honorary pallbearers will be Doyle Hindmon, Paul Carr, and Louis Couch.
