She was affectionately known to many as "Mama Bessie". Mrs. Spencer was a native of Biscoe, Ark., a resident of Collinston for over 60 years; a member of Hannah Chapter No. 15 Order the Eastern Star and New Star Missionary Baptist Church. She was married to Eddie Spencer who preceded her in death in 1969. She was also preceded in death by two children, James Edward Spencer in 1985 and Clotine Harris in 1997. A brother and two sisters also preceded her in death. Mrs. Spencer is survived by four daughters, Gloria Spencer of Los Angeles, Calif., Lenora Shaw and Irma Lemons of Chicago, Ill, and Doris Maxine Ridgel of Springhill; one son, Morris McDean Spencer Sr. of Collinston; three brothers, Robert Sanders, Marvin Sanders and Harvey Sanders of Chicago; four sisters, Essie Mae Jeans, Gladys Marie Moore, Jannie Sanders and Addie Chocolate (Joseph) of Chicago; two sons-in-law, John Lee Harris of Monroe and Mulachi Ridgel of Springhill; three daughters-in-law, Rosie Spencer of Bastrop, Bennie Spencer of Monroe and Betty Spender of Ferriday; 47 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; 53 great-great-grandchildren; and 33 great-great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at the New Star Missionary Baptist Church, 4780 New Star Avenue in Collinston, with the Rev. David Campbell officiating.
