They settled in the area known as "Gum Swamp," which is now Collinston. After Mary Charlotte died in child birth, in 1861, Samuel moved to Bastrop and built a home on the east side of Bastrop. The old home still stands at the fork of the Mer Rouge Road and the Grabault Road.
