Burnside, a native of Mississippi, was born in Neshoba County December, 1857, the oldest child of John and Martha (Jones) Burnside, the father a native of South Carolina, born in 1808, and the mother of Alabama, born in 1833. They were married in 1854. The father was a planter, and emigrated from South Carolina to Alabama at an early day, locating in Pickens County, where he resided a short time, and then emigrated to Mississippi, commenced farming in Neshoba County, and resided there until his death, which occurred November 22, 1871. His widow is still lining ov the old home place. Lake Burnside was named after a brother of his. He was a member of the Masonic and Pattsburg, Miss., fraternities, and was a Royal Arch Mason, held the office of justice of the peace for a number of years, and his widow is a devout member of the Baptist Church. L. R. Burnside was educated in the private schools of his native county, and the age of twenty years decided to work on his own responsibility, and engaged in farming, which he conducted until 1882, when he emigrated to Louisiana. In 1877 he married Miss Rosanna T. Fox, a native Mississippian, but she died January 20, 1890, leaving two children, Robert H. and Emmet, to mourn their loss. March 23, 1890, he was married again to Miss Jane Graham, a native of Alabama. She is a member of the Baptist Church. Although he started out with little, he has, through energy and perseverance, succeeded in establishing a merchandising business valued at $12,000, and also owns 183 acres of land, 12 acres under cultivation. He is a member of the A. O. U. W., and a liberal contributor to all public enterprises.
