Carter a physician of acknowledged merit in Natchitoches Parish, and a prominent and honored citizen of Robeline, La., was born in the parish of Natchitoches, te miles west of the city of Natchitoches, November 22, 1851. He was initialed into the duties of the farm at an early age, and received his primary education in the parish schools. In 1871 he entered Shelbyville college, at Shelbyville, Tex., and here attended six months, after which he spent about two years on his father's farm. In 1873 he began the study of medicine, under the direction of Dr. C. Cunningham, of Natchitoches. He studied with him about one year, and in the fall of 1874 entered the Tulane Medical College, of New Orleans, in which he took two full courses of lectures, graduating in March, 1876. He at once began the practice of his profession in Natchitoches Parish, and here he has been actively engaged EHV since, being now one of its most prominent physicians. In 1881 he located to Robeline, and he is now the leading physician of that place. Dr. Carter was married October 3, 1877, to Miss Sarah L. Smith, daughter of Robert E. Smith, of Natchitoches, and the fruits of this union were five children: Mason T., Silas E., Norwood W., Laura L. and Eva T. All are living, with the exception of Laura L., who died at the age of one year. Mr. Carter is a member of the Baptist, and his wife a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The Doctor devotes his entire attention to his profession, and he has built up a wide reputation as an able physician and skillful surgeon. He has a wide acquaintance, and in every circle of life, whether of a social, religious or professional character, his standing is of the best. He and wife have a large number of friends, and are highly esteemed by all. The doctor is a stanch Democrat in his political preferences. The father of Dr. Carter, Isaac F. Carter, was born in Covington, County, Miss., and removed to Louisiana, locating in Natchitoches Parish in 1840. He spent the remainder of his life in this parish, and was one of the substantial and leading planters. He died in 1853. The mother, whose maiden name was Margaret U. Hoden, was born in Amite County, Miss., and was there married to Isaac F. Carter, whom she accompanied to this parish. About one year after the death of Mr. Carter, she was married to Hon. W. A. Ponder, late State representative from Natchitoches Parish. She died in 1879, and Mr. Ponder in 1890.
