Dixon, merchant and planter, Natchitoches, La. Among the many prominent and successful citizens of Natchitoches Parish, who are not only prosperous in their business relations, but who are esteemed and respected for their many good qualitites, ranks the name of Jared S. Dixon. He was originally from Bossier Parish of this State, his birth occurring on May 6, 1860, and is the son of J. M. and Lizzie (Dalrymple) Dixon. The father was born in the southern part of Louisiana in 1827, and died at Franklin, La., in 1863, from the effect of wounds received while in the army. He was a member of the Third Louisiana Calvary. The mother was a native of South Carolina, born in 1840, and died at Collinsburg, La., in 1876. Of the two children born to their union, Jared Dixon is the elder in order of birth. He received a good education in the common and public schools. In 1885 Mr. Dixon came to this portion of Natchitoches and began opening a plantation eleven miles northwest of this city. He established his store in 1886. He now cultivates about 1,000 acres of land, and is making a success of agricultural pursuits as well as his mercantile business. He is a Democrat in politics, and in 1877 was instrumental in establishing Egypt post office of which he was appointed postmaster. Egypt is now connected with Natchitoches by telephone, which was built by Mr. Dixon, in January, 1890. In 1882 he joined Rocky Mountain Lodge, K. of P., in Louisiana, and was transferred to Dixie Lodge and subsequently to Natchitoches Lodge No. 89, of which he is now a member. He is one of the substantial men of the parish.
