The latter's father, Valentine Nash, was one of the old settlers of Sabine Parish, and has now attained to the advanced age of ninety five years, being one of the most highly esteemed residents in this section. Owing to the early death of his parents Mr. Gay was reared by his grandfather, Nash, and was given the advantages of the common schools in his youth. In 1880 he stared out for himself, and opened a general mercantile establishment at Many, La., being in partnership with his brother, the firm name being L. B. and F. C. Gay. In 1881 they removed to Robeline, and here continued their business taking A. H. Hogue as a partner, the name of the firm being Hogue & Gay Bros. After remaining associated for two years they dissolved partnership, and for five years Mr. Gay has followed his present calling, at which he is doing well. He keeps a large and excellent line of goods, and his house is at all times orderly and quiet. In 1880 his marriage with Miss Lulu Fox was celebrated, she being a native of Alexandria, La., and intelligent and pleasant lady. Their family consists of four children, whose names are as follows: Lafayette, Louis B., Nena and Howard. As a Democrat Mr. Gay has always supported the men and measures of that party, and socially he belongs to Natchitoches Lodge No. 89, of the A. F. & A. M., and also belongs to the K. of P.
