Gervis Trichel is a native born resident of this parish, and the confidence which the people have in him is therefore intelligently placed, for they have know him from infancy, and have had every opportunity to judge of his character and qualifications. He was born on December 21, 1842, and is a son of Leonard and Zelia (Perot) Trichel, natives also of Natchitoches Parish, La. The former was born in 1819, and was a farmer by occupation, he died here in 1887. The mother was born about 1824, and now resides here. Gervis L. Trichel, the eldest of eleven children, four of whom are now living, was educated in the schools of Natchitoches. In 1861 he enlisted in Company D., Third Louisiana Infantry, Confederate States Army, and upon the re organization of the company in 1862, he was elected first lieutenant of Company D, which position he held until cessation of hostilities. He was wounded at the battle of Iuka, Miss., and was made a prisoner of war at the siege of Vicksburg. Returning to Louisiana after the war he engaged principally in farming, and this he continued until 1880, when he became deputy sheriff of Natchitoches Parish. This position he held for four years, and in April, 1864, he was elected to the position of sheriff. Four years later he was reelected to the same office, his present term expiring in 1892. Mr. Trichel is a capable and efficient officer, and a popular man and citizen. He was united in marriage to Miss Emma E. Owen, a native of Mississippi, in Jackson Parish in 1865, and the result of this union has been four children: Annie Celeste, Martha Estelle, Lelia Ethel and Vivial Oleida. Mr. Trichel is a member of the Masonic fraternity, Lake village Lodge No. 196, and a charter member of Natchitoches Lodge No. 89, K. of P.. He is a Democrat in politics, and is one of the most popular and accommodating men in the parish.
