Cemetery: Rachal Cemetery, Natchitoches Parish La Submitted by Jane Parker McManus (mcmanus@linknet.net). **************************************************** ********************************************** Copyright. All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** ************************************************ ***************************************************** RACHAL CEMETERY - Natchitoches Parish Take I-49 North from Alexandria, get off at Exit # 107 (Lena/Flatwoods) and turn right. At stop sign on old LA Hwy. 1, turn right briefly and then back left. Continue to new LA Hwy. 1 (about .5 miles total) and turn left. Go approximately .5 miles past the Natchitoches Parish sign, and turn right on the next road toward Lock and Dam (no sign). Go 2.0 miles and turn right on Marco Road. Rachal Cemetery and the old church are located .8 miles on right side of the road. [Alternate directions: Go 2.6 miles past the Natchitoches Parish sign and turn right on Marco Road. Church & Cemetery is 4.0 miles on the left.] A small white frame Catholic church with small bell tower (no longer used as a church) is situated to the right of the cemetery. Plaque on church reads: Renovated in memory of Mrs. Edwina Dean De Lacerda - 7 July 1899/19 October 1957 The cemetery is completely surrounded with a hurricane fence. The main gate has a large iron arch with "Rachal's Cemetery" inscribed on top. An iron cross is on the arch. Burials inside a fenced enclosure in the church yard was read first, followed by other fenced enclosures inside the main cemetery. There were many very old iron crosses in one section of the cemetery, some with letters barely readable. Where possible those letters are included with an explanation. Also, some of the inscriptions were in French, and these were transcribed into English by Winston DeVille, FASG. Tombstones recorded by Mary Parker Partain, January 1994, and submitted by Jane Parker McManus (mcmanus@linknet.net). * * * [fenced enclosure inside church yard - Delacerda on gate] * * * Delacerda, Felix E. - 2 Mar 1892/25 Dec 1980 Delacerda, Edwina Dean - 7 Jul 1899/19 Oct 1957 [outside enclosure, toward back] Rachal, Albert - 15 Aug 1879/19 Nov 1963 Rachal, Annie L. - 23 May 1888/14 Jul 1978 Rachal, Charles William - 7 Jun 1923/16 May 1965 Rachal, Dannie R. - 19 Jan 1942/13 Mar 1960 Rachal, Rosa D. - 19 Jan 1899/5 Jul 1971 Mother Rachal, Edmond - 30 Jan 1896/5 Jan 1983, Pvt. The crosses are not alike, and are not all intact (some just have the upright portion of cross with the crossbar missing]. These 21 iron crosses are too close together to indicate 21 separate burials; the area would normally cover about five burial spaces. There are also several broken, but still standing, brick tombs on this knoll. Engraving, if present, was extremely difficult to read; standard methods of chalking did not work. The following is an example of those we were able to decipher.
