For instance if you see a value of 5M, it doesn't mean 5 million, it means 5,000.) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please verify any information found by looking at the microfilmed copy of the original handwritten census record because there is always the possibility of human error in the transcription of the census to book form and/or the transcription from book form to this format. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Acknowledgments This volume is by no means a one person compilation; but, involved a number of individuals, each providing a valuable service to modern researchers. Special appreciation is first expressed to the men who actually traveled the long, hot, dusty roads and paths of Natchitoches Parish - often on foot - in 1850 to gather this information. Without their efforts this work would never have been possible. Thanks is extended to Mrs. Gloria Iglesias who spent many hours transcribing the census from microfilm to individual index card. This was, in itself, a tremendous task. And, thanks to the Shreve Memorial Library in Shreveport, Louisiana, for their cooperation in this effort. Thanks is also extended to Mr. George Iglesias and Mrs. Hazel Baxley Clement for their patience and encouragement to their spouses. Appreciation is also extended to Etienne Henri Dion Clement who is in charge of SGI Press. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Preface Early inhabitants of Louisiana experienced divers forms of government under the rule of France, Spain, England and finally the United States. Many of the early settlers of Louisiana were French and Spanish. During the Revolutionary War there was a great influx of loyal Britons who moved to Louisiana to avoid conflict with the mother country. Soon (1 October 1804) after the Louisiana Purchase, the area as we know it today was divided into two parts. The northern half was named "District of Louisiana" and the lower part "Territory of Orleans". That was 173 years ago and, ironically, Louisiana is still divided into what could be two states. North and South Louisiana are entirely unlike. Shreveport, the second largest city, resembles Dallas, Texas more than it does New Orleans. The northern part is basically an Anglo-saxon, protestant culture while the southern part is basically French - Spanish and Catholic. Nachitoches Parish, although in North Louisiana, is the sole exception to this. The parish is surrounded by predominately Anglo-Saxon Protestants. Natchioches, however, is undeniably French. The town of Natchitoches, the oldest town in Louisiana, was founded in 1714, four years before New Orleans. It was originally a fort on the road which led from Mexico to the Mississippi River. Natchioches Parish was formed in 1807 as one of the 12 original counties of the state. Originally the District of Louisiana formed counties while the Territory of Orleans formed parishes. Now however, all are called parishes. The region embraced by Natchitoches Parish was first explored by LaSalle in 1687 and was settled, according to tradition, by Canary Islanders who came by way of Mexico in 1691. Sier de Bienville and Juchereau de St. Denis made the first extensive exploration of the area in 1700 and, in 1714, St. Denis was sent to the area to protect French territory against Spanish encroachment. In that year he established Fort St. Jean Baptiste which became the town of Natchitoches. Natchitoches was named after a tribe of Caddo Indians. The name means chestnut, or pawpaw, eaters. No attempt has been made in this volume to record a history of Natchitoches. There are already too many versions. Instead, we merely wish to spotlight the people who helped make that history possible. This work, then, is a complete enumeration of Natchitoches Parish as it was in 1850. At that time (1850) Natchitoches Parish was composed of the present day area, plus parts of what is now Red River Vernon, Winn and Grant parishes. The map at right shows the general area covered by Natchitoches in 1850. Present-day boundary lines are in heavy outline. It is suspected that some persons who lived in the border parishes, especially along the parish lines, were included in the Natchitoches census. This happened often because no clear indication of lines could be determined. Many times you may even find the same person listed twice in a census by two different enumerators because they themselves could not determine the boundary of their own districts. We have also added in this work the 1850 Morality schedule for Natchitoches Parish. It is sad that names of slaves were omitted. We trust that this volume will be of help to the Louisiana genealogical and historical researcher. Sincerely, James A. Clement Jr. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- How To Use This Work The 1850 Federal Census of Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana is printed here in 11 columns. The following paragraphs explain the meaning of each column with other necessary details for its use. Column One - Family Number The number here is the family's number as it appeared in column two of the original census. The only change we have made is to add the letter "N" before the number of those who lived in the Town of Natchitoches. Column Two - Name The second column lists the names of all persons living in the household. Families are listed in alphabetical order by the surname of the head of household. In addition, any person living within a home with a different surname is also included in the alpabetical order as well as within the household in which they lived. Other points of importance should be noted for this column. First the spelling of names may raise questions. It must be pointed out however, that the enumerators spelled names just as they sounded to them. If they did not know how to spell the name, they did the best they could. And, too, many of those enumerated could not read nor write; therefore they could not correct the spelling of their names. No effort has been made on our part to correct any spelling. In fact, it was a tremendous task to not correct the spelling of enumerators. For example, the Spanish name Quadloupe was spelled many times as "Warloupe". Can you imagine an enumerator trying to spell "Oliver" when spoken by a Frenchman? It comes out "Oliviar". What was he to do with the name Rowe? Was it Roe or Rowe. Sometimes we suspect the name "Rae" was spelled with an "o" that looks like an "a". What about "Rachal/Rochal"? Which is it? It was found both ways. A simple name like "Isaac" sometimes came out "Isal". What about "Knight/Night"? We had it both ways. Then there was "Wharina" for "Juanna"; "Hessuse" for "Jesus"; and "Whanneta" for "Juanita". In the case of some questionable letters, a comparison was made with other letters written by the enumerator where the correct spelling was known. Still, some may have completely evaded us. Therefore, when using this column, especially with surnames, be sure to check all possible variations. Column Three - Age Age of each person. When there was a question or marked over age, it has been indicated. In some cases there was no age listed and/or was completely unreadable. Column Four - Sex Sex of each person. The sex is underlined in cases where a name would suggest a sex. In some cases the enumerator actually put the wrong sex; however, we did not change his record. If the space in this column is blank it was blank on the original. If there is a question mark the original was marked over and/or was unreadable. Column Five - Color Color (white, black, mulatto). In this enumeration the space was left blank for white persons. Column Six - Profession Profession, occupation or trade of each male over 15 years of age. Sometimes the enumerator did not fill this space. Column Seven - Real Estate Value Value of real estate owned. (Please note: In this book, the M=thousand. For instance if you see a value of 5M, it doesn't mean 5 million, it means 5,000.) Column Eight - Birthplace Place of birth, naming the state, territory, or country. Again, the enumerator sometimes left this space blank. Column Nine - Newly Married Indicates the person was married within the year. Column Ten - School Attendance Indicates the person attended school within the year. Column Eleven - Literacy Persons over 20 years of age who could not read or write. Sometimes those under 20 were also marked in this column. A remark has been included for twins, persons listed as being deaf and dumb, blind, insane, idiots, paupers or convicts. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: Because of space limitations, columns 9, 10, and 11 were not included in these pages. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Q - Family # Name Age Sex Race Profession R.E.
