Church: Beulah Methodist Church, Natchitoches Parish La Submitted by: Myra Dowden I am a member of this church and grew up in this area. My family has been here since before the beginning of this church. I would be happy to answer any questions abut the area or its' residents. The Reverend B.F. Alexander, a circuit rider of the Methodist Church, and with the assistance of most of the members listed as having joined in 1860, Beulah Methodist Church began and it has never been without a pastor since its organization. The doors were open throughout the Civil War & Reconstruction Period, and for the duration of World War I and II. The first preachers, known as circuit riders, traveled long distances on horseback and served several charges. Some of the members of the church would build a room on to the back of their home for the preacher to stay while visiting his charges. Beulah Methodist Church is located in the northwestern corner of Natchitoches Parish, approximately five miles North of Marthaville on Highway 487. The church that stands today is the third to occupy the site since the organization of the church in 1860. The first building was constructed of logs. It was torn down in the early 1900's and replaced by a larger board and batten building. This building had two front doors and two large fireplaces. I was told by some of the elders that it was customary for churches to have two doors back then, one was for men and the other was for women and children. In 1924 after an election that had been held there the day before, the church burned to the ground. John A. Ingram donated lumber and hauled it to the site from his mill where he and other members from the community built the present structure. It sits just a few hundred feet from the highway with the Beulah Cemetery behind it. These forty acres were donated by Adam P. Massey on the 30th of November, 1861 for the purpose of a Church Edifice, Camp Ground, Burying Ground and Parsonage. Two tabernacles once sat on the grounds not far from where the church now sits. These were the sites for large revivals and regular singings and get togethers. The tabernacles and church grounds were also a safe haven for weary travelers on their way west. People would camp and rest up for days even up to a year before pressing onward through the wilderness. The Church was also used as a school until a school house could later be constructed. This first school house stood on church grounds located across Hwy. 487 where Charlie and Bonnie Montpelier now live. The cemetery began in 1861 and ironically the first person to be buried in the cemetery was Maaka Massey, the nine year old daughter of Adam & Emily Massey. While services were being held, screaming was heard at the Bolton home about a half mile east of the church. When the men went to see what was wrong, they found that the young daughter of Nancy & Elijah Bolton had just passed away. They placed her next to Maaka. In May of 1988, a memorial marker was placed at the grave site of the two girls marking the graves of the first two to be buried in the Beulah Cemetery. Since its' beginning in 1861 it has grown to over 1,200 grave sites 351 of these are unmarked graves. The cemetery records were compiled by Myra J. Dowden but could not have been completed without the help of Deannie James that has kept up the records and that of Ethel J. Wagley who has helped to identify many of the unmarked graves and a special tribute to Tommy Jennings, some of these records were copied from his book he published in 1964 and would have been lost if not for this. The data on the following pages was taken from the original records kept by members of the church. Unfortunately, over the years, pages containing names of members have been lost, but for the most part the records or in tact. The Register of Pastors, Register of Members, Register of Baptisms and some of the minutes from the Church Conference Records are included. Both spelling and grammar are uncorrected.
