CHOPIN BIBLIOGRAPHY AVAILABLE FOR SCHOLARS Researchers examining the work of author Kate Chopin have a new resource available to help them access what other scholars have said about her writings. A new book, "Kate Chopin: An Annotated Bibliography of Critical Works," has been co-authored by Dr. Suzanne Green, an assistant professor of English at Northwestern State University. David J. Caudle, a doctoral candidate at the University of North Texas, was the co-author. The book was published by Greenwood Press, a leading academic publisher. "Green and Caudle have produced an indispensable resource for all students of Chopin and of American literature," said Barbara C. Ewell of Loyola University, New Orleans. This well-organized and carefully researched volume and the expanding scholarship it chronicles should evaporate any lingering doubts about the importance of Kate Chopin's work in the American literary canon. A must-have for the serious Chopin scholar." Green, who teaches American literature, has published numerous articles on Chopin in journals including Southern Studies and CEA Critics. Her interest in Chopin began in graduate school when a faculty member enthusiastically recommended Chopin's novel, "The Awakening." Chopin has emerged as one of the most significant American writers of the 19th century. Though her works typically reflect the language and customs of the Louisiana of her memories, they also make universal comments about women, men, and human relationships. In addition to "The Awakening," she also wrote nearly 100 short stores, essays, poems, reviews and a play. While the contemporary response to her works was sometimes negative, much recent critical debate concerns her lasting place among American authors, with some scholars placing "The Awakening" on the same level as "Moby Dick." According to Green, there has been a heightened interest in Chopin's works over the past 30 years. This bibliography provides a comprehensive survey of critical work on Chopin published between 1976 and 1998, with some coverage of 1999. Included are annotated entries for books, articles, dissertations, biographical studies and bibliographical works. Extensive indexes offer easy access to the entries. In addition, the volume includes a biographical sketch, a review of trends in Chopin scholarship and textual history.
