The Red River Gazette was established in this place in June 1837 by R. P. Decpaillier. It had a monopoly for several years, as the next record I find is the publication of the Chronicle by Thom. C. Hunter in 1848. In 1858, Wm. M. Levy (later congressman) became editor of the Chronicle. In 1860, the Union was established at Natchitoches by Ernest L. LeGendre. It was also "half and half" (French and English).
