Looking Back Through the files of the Natchitoches Times By Mary Jean Thomas September 19, 1999 issue. 1949 Gov. Earl K. Long will open Hwy. 20 in a ceremony at the bridge 2 miles south of Cloutierville. A barbecue in Cecil McGraw's pecan grove will follow. City opens a new garbage dump near the municipal airport. Police Department completes new pistol range below the airport. A water main at Texas and Second Streets breaks and leaves that section of town without water all day. The new street sweeper makes its first run attracting much interest. J. E. Pierson, Chamber of Commerce chairman for the event announces a barn dance at the Natchitoches Recreation Center. The fourth annual State Knights of Columbus Golf Tournament held here was a huge success, says chairman George Kirspel. Sam Salim and W. H. Readhimer were winners. Registration at local college reaches 1, 383 with 146 coming from Natchitoches parish. Class officers are elected at Natchitoches High School. Presidents are seniors David Kendrick, junior Jo Ann Breedlove, sophomores Wayne Dew and freshman Keith West. Student Pat S. Todd is shown with an exhibit depicting activities at St. Mary's High School. Honored for 25 years of service with the Knights of Columbus are C. A. Rivet, George H. Himel, J. Augustine Raggio, J. Alphonse Prudhomme, Vernon Cloutier, Emmanuel Cloutier, Jr., J. C. DeBlieux, Jr. and Percy Prudhomme. Mrs. Henry Bernard assumes duties as president of P. E. O. and Mrs. A. L. Ducournau is elected vice president.
