E.L. Pierson, member of the legislature from Natchitoches parish, was killed last Sunday in the town of Natchitoches by J.H. Cosgrove, Esq., editor of the Vindicator of that place. The difficulty orginated (sic) in a newspaper controversy, in which the epithets of coward, &c, were exchanged. Pierson was a Kelloggite, Cosgrove a Democrat. The Ouachita Telegraph Friday, January 7, 1876 Page 1, Column 6 From a letter dated at Natchitoches, December 28th., written by Mr. Willis Holmes, a merchant of that town, and addressed to Mr. H.B. Warmsley, of this city, the following is taken: “E.L. Pierson was killed by J.H. Cosgrove about 9 o’clock in the morning and fired three shots at him. Cosgrave (sic) then obtained a pistol and shot Pierson as he ran; the ball entering the back near the shoulder and resulting in death in half an hour.” – N.O. Picayune. # # #
