Stauffer, formerly of New Orleans, by John Jones. Judge Robert B. Jones, late of the Supreme Court, and his brother, Dr. Jones, were also parties to the affray. The sheriff, John Hughes, was wounded on the head in attempting to make an arrest. Judge and Doctor Jones are both in jail, but John Jones was at large at last advices. How the quarrel originated is not known, but it is thought from some business transactions between John Jones and Stauffer, who had been till recently partners in Business in Natchitoches. It is also surmised that the Joneses desired to get rid of Stauffer, he being the most prominent Radical candidate for the Convention, a position one of the brothers seemed to covet on the same ticket. Mr. Stauffer was a member of the Convention of 1864, and afterwards appointed by Gov. Wells Register of voters for New Orleans. Judge Jones was a member of the Legislature of the same year, but resigned upon the receiving the appointment of Associate Justice of the Supreme Court from Gov. Wells. NOTE: The June 27, 1867 edition of the Ouachita Telegraph, Page 2, Column 1 announces a $1,000 reward offered by Gov. Flanders for the capture of John Jones. # # #
