Norred, April 2010 No. 4 Henry M Fleury and Jared Cable of the county of Natchitoches assignees of Peggy Shabino (Peggy Crow), filed their notice claiming 640 acres of land situated in the late Neutral Territory between the Rio Hondo and Sabine Rivers. This claim is founded on habitation and cultivation by Peggy Sharbino by purchase. The evidence of Benjamin P. Belis taken this 14th of Dec 1835 states “That in the year 1816 or 1817 he went to the house of Peggy Crow alias Peggy Sharbino on the East side of the Sabine River”- “about three quarters of a mile or one mile from the place called Crow’s Ferry, that he returned to the place in 1820 and she still resided at the same place – believes that between the years 1817 and 1820 she always resided without interruption on the same place, that her present residence is within about a quarter of a mile from her former residence in 1817 – that Peggy Sharbino has always been considered as the owner and proprietor of the place whereon she resided, and has from the time this deponent has known it up to this time that when he first went there in 1816 or 1817, the tract of land was improved. There was a small field and a dwelling house, the silo was larger when he saw the place again in 1820, does not recollect when she moved to the place where she now resides, but is positive it was after the year 1820, deponent considers and believes that the change of residence of the said Peggy was not with a view to abandon her right to the land, as she always cultivated the same field and her change of place as to her dwelling house was always at a short distance from and always in sight of her field.” The evidence of William Callaghan taken on the same day states “that ever since the month of June 1815 has known and has been at the residence of Peggy Crow alias Peggy Sharbino at the place mentioned in the affidavit of Benjamin P. Biles which was taken in his presence, that he knows of his own personal knowledge, that all the facts stated in said Biles’ affidavit are true and correct, that he has been in the habit of travelling frequently between the Town of Natchitoches and the Sabine River and has always seen the said Peggy at the different residences mentioned in the affidavit of said Biles, and always within a short distance of his first settlement.” The testimony of Domingo Gonsales also filed in this claim fully establishes the cultivation and possession of the land in question by Peggy Crow alias Peggy Sharbino on and previous to the 22nd of Feb’y 1819. The evidence of William Callaghan and Benj. P. Biles taken subsequent to their first declarations also establish the possession and cultivating at that time. It has been presented to the board that this claim is within the limits of the claim of the widow and heirs of Isaac Crow dec. ? Reported by the Register and Receiver under No. 182, the 1st of Nov. 1824 and notwithstanding this fact, and as the confirmation of a claim is merely a relinquishment by the Government, we recommend this claim for confirmation.
