M. Levy of the Lecompte Guards to Messers, A Lecompte, M. Boyce, G. S. Walmsley, A. H. Pierson, P. Prudhomme, Hyp. Hertzog) Gentlemen. I address this letter to you all to be used and shown to such other citizens of our good old Parish as you may deem necessary to aid in the matter about which I write to you. The Company fund raised by individual subscription was well nigh exhausted before we left New Orleans in the purchase Of uniforms, underclothes and other necessary clothing and equipment A very small amount now remains on hand, and it is absolutely necessary that the men should be furnished with additional clothing and overcoats. There is no probability indeed no apparent possibility of their being supplied by the Confederate State, and here upon the Atlantic Coast they will actually suffer without the additional clothing. As you know my company is composed of men who are nearly all poor and unable to buy these things themselves. I regret that my own means do not allow me to furnish them. I have given to my men every article of thick clothing of my own which I could possibly spare. Nearly every Parish in the State except Natchitoches, has through its Police Jury made liberal appropriations for the comforts and substantial equipment with suitable clothing of their Volunteers. Will the old Parish of Natchitoches be behind her sisters in such work? I believe not. If the Police Jury means to do anything. to be serviceable to use, it must be done speedily. With 117 gallant and willing soldiers as ever set foot to ground or shouldered musket, it would be a crying shame that they should be allowed to suffer. The generosity of individuals has been nobly illustrated by all of you, and to tax individual liberality farther would be unjust. I only ask that the Parochial authorities will do their best in the premise. If they do so, I would request that you, in behalf of my Company, Lacompte Guards, draw and remit by certificate of deposit or check on Richmond, to me in the care of Col. DeRussy, 2nd. Regiment, LA Vols. Yorktown, Va. We are in the post of danger which is the post of honor and expect in a few days to commence advancing towards Fort Monroe. We are all well and ready for the fight. W.M. Levy Captain of the Lecompte Guards
