And Joe Pennina, two of the Italian charged with the murder of Joe Mondelio, Sr. and the wholesale shooting of the Mondelio family and home at Powhatan last September, had sawed two bars from one of the West windows of the jail, reached the ground by climbing down a line of blankets tied together and made good their escape. Telegrams were sent to all points in an effort to apprehend the fugitives; but so far all efforts have been futile. After the escape of the Pinninas, a diligent search was made of the jail. Two pieces of broken hack saw were found on the person of H K Wiley, the Boleyn forger and embezzler. Evidence was found showing that the he had commenced to work on the bars of his department of the jail, with some instrument. This led to the discovery of the saws which were sewed in false soles of his shoes. Wiley has since been placed in the cells and the privileges and courtesies previously extended him withdrawn. Wiley was guilty of forgery, embezzlement and robbing the mail while in a confidential capacity at Boleyn. He was convicted in the Federal Court on the mail charge, served his sentence in the Atlanta penitentiary, and is now here on State charges. It is thought that Wiley, who is quite a king among the prisoners, advised and assisted the Pinninas and that it was with his saw that they cut the jail bars.
