To the memory of Miss DESIREE HERTZOG, who departed this life on Friday, September 17th, at the age of 20 years and 3 months. "Life! What is life? a shadow. Its date is but the immediate breath we draw; A frail and fickle tenement it is, Which, like the brille glass that measures time, Is often broken, ere half its sads are run." But yesterday, the pride, ornament and felicitous source of a father's and mother's joy and hope; to-day, like the innocent flower, fresh from the touch of the Florist's hand, stung by a hidden unseen agent, sickens, withers - dies. But yesterday, blooming with the glow of health and youth; to-day, prostrate in the frozen clamp of death. Who would have spied a little while ago, attended by the friends and companions of her faith assisting at the festivities of her church on the 15th of last month, with a heart pure and unsullied, and uplifted towards it Throne of Grace, that she too, peace, peace to her ashes, was to be borne up the gloomy way, to take up her abode in the silent city, the vestible leading to Eternity. In that spot to-night, o'er that expansive sphere, Wakes manhood's sympathy, asks woman's tear. At a period in life, when the graces and charms of womanhood blend in happy, touching and admirable unison, with the moral adornments of a sweet, loving and unassuming nature; with a wide held of usefulness and noble aspirations open to her; the idol of fond parents; beloved by a large circle of friends and relations; esteemed and respected by an entire community for the excellence of her young womanly traits; pions, assaiduous and devoted in the exercise of her religious duties. Thus armed to do battle with life and world, pale and ghastly Death, as if anticipating the measureless cup of parental joy and happiness, and remembering that such bliss is unsuitted [sic] to mortals here below, strikes the fatal blow and - all is over. We are, we were, we shall be; this contains The field of all our pleasures, and our pains. To the bereaved and afflicted parents; to the strcken mother especially, so well known as a beautiful example of womanly courage and fortitude, whose door has more than once been invaded by this same Destroyer, but whose mind and sould, fortified and expanding, despising easy triumphs, rising above the terrors of the hour, as each successive blow is given, sees them fall pwerless at the base of an unconquered nature. To them our heartfelt sympathy is extended. Farewell, young friend, too pure for earth, An Angel's voice has summon'd thee above; 'Mid scenes of joy, of bliss and mirth, A nobler, purer, holier state of love. Weep not thus O father dear, Kind Heavens claims me now as He; O mother, yield not thus to soorow's tear, Thy child's reward is Eternal bliss. Her soul has winged its flight on high, No wrath can tob thy sleeping daughter's breath; She mounts from this foul scene to immortality, Where is never felt the pang of Death. Antoher Angel joins the Celestial choir, Sweetly reposing in innocence divine; Thy blissful term shall never expire Thy luminous star shall never decline. Thy Earthly pilgimage is o'er, Thy joys are far beyond the grave; Thou hast reach'd the distant, happy shore, Where dwelleth the just, the holy, the brave. A FRIEND. Cote Joyeuse, September 19th, 1875. Additional Comments: The obituary is followed by a Memoriam and also an obituary written in French that names her parents as Mattheiu Hertzog and Atela Lecomte.
