Matthews 1 Dec 1939 - Gunshot wounds received accidentally while hunting squirrels Saturday afternoon proved fatal to J. C. Matthews, 29, of Shreveport, at 10:15 a.m. Sunday in Charity hospital. Matthews was given a blood transfusion Saturday night but hospital attendants said he did not rally after being admitted at 3:20 p.m. Saturday. He was shot in the left side of the chest at close range with an automatic shotgun when he stumbled and fell. he was carrying the loaded gun in a timbered area just off the Greenwood road near the Shreveport city limits. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Central Baptist church near Robeline with the Rev. J. B. Ingle, pastor of the Jordan Street Chruch of the Nazarene, officiating. Burial was in the Central Baptist cemetery. Matthew is survived by his mother, Mrs. M. T. Bowden of Many; three sister, Mrs. William Carter of Springhill, Ruth Lee Matthews and Veva Rae Matthews of Many; and four brothers, W. B. and Grady Matthews of Shreveport, and Harold and Horace Matthew of Many.
