LEONARD MELVIN DIETRICH Funeral services for Leonard Melvin Dietrich, 65, of Natchitoches are pending. Burial will be in Fern Park Cemetery under the direction of Blanchard-St. Denis Funeral Home. Mr. Dietrich died Wednesday, June 30, 1999 at Natchitoches Parish Hospital. He was a life long resident of Natchitoches, a local businessman for the past 46 years, former owner of Fountain Blue Restaurant, Dietrich Slaughterhouse and a former poultry grower for ConAgra. Survivors include his wife, Guinevere Martin Dietrich; one son, Roger Dietrich; two daughter, Karen Talbott and Denise Hawkins, all of Natchitoches; four sisters, Nelda Deen of Pasadena, Texas, Rebecca Yates of Canyon Lake, Texas, Linda Dietrich of Tennessee and Rita Dietrich of Denver, Colo.; two brothers, Arthur Dietrich of Baton Rouge and Wayne Dietrich of Oklahoma, Okla.; six grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. He is a native of Cloutierville and a former resident of Ore City. He was a retired Lone Star Steel foreman in #2 pipe mill. Mr. Vercher served in the U. S. Army and was a WWII veteran who received a silver star for his gallantry in action while under hostile fire. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Sue Vercher of Ore City; one daughter Regina Kurtz and son-in-law Ray of Tyler, Texas; and grandchildren Candace and Nathanel. BARBARA JANE BARNHILL Funeral services for Barbara Jane Barnhill, 49, of Natchitoches were held Tuesday, July 13 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Blanchard-St. Denis funeral Home with the Revs. Mike Honzel and Barney Barnhill officiating. Burial followed in Pisgah Cemetery in Marthaville. Mrs. Barnhill died Sunday, July 11, 1999 at her residence. She was a native of Ft. Hood, Texas. Mrs. Barnhill was a member of the Westside Baptist Church in Natchitoches. At the time of her death, she was assistant branch manager of the Bank of Montgomery in Derry. She was the former office manager for the CPA firm of Hines, Jackson & Hines in Natchitoches. She was also a loving and caring mother, daughter and sister. She was a 1968 graduate of Robeline High School where she was the valedictorian of her class. Survivors include her daughter, Monica Lambert of Natchitoches; her mother and step-father, Mrs. Peggy and Nelson Maricelli of Natchitoches; and two sisters, Jeannie Curtis and Judy Broadway, both of Many. He was a native of Akron, Iowa, a veteran of the U. S. Army, retiring as a master sergeant after serving in WWII and the Korean conflict. He also retired as food supervisor for the state of Louisiana Welfare Department. During his service time he taught ROTC at NSU from 1963-1966. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, VFW, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and the Masonic Lodge F & AM #38. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Ray Port and brother, Richard Port. He is survived by his wife, Maxine Peterson Port of Natchitoches; daughter-in-law, Joan Port of St. Francisville; brother, Harold Port of Palm Harbor, Fla.; granddaughters Tara Watson of Cummings, Ga., Terri Findley of Mt. Burial was in the Bethlehem Cemetery under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield. Mr. Canerday died Saturday, July 24, 1999 at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Calvin and has lived in Singer since 1969. He was a graduate of Calvin High School and an All-State basketball player of the Calvin High School state championship team in 1939. He received his bachelor and master's of education degrees from Northwestern Sate University in Natchitoches. He was a teacher, coach, principal and supervisor in Natchitoches Parish before retiring from the Louisiana Public School System. He was a member of the Beauregard Parish School Board, Rotary Club of DeQuincy, VFW Post 3802 of DeQuincy and various other local clubs and organization. He was president of Beauregard Parish Farm Bureau, served on the Board of Directors of the Louisiana Farm Bureau and on the Board of Directors of the Louisiana Heart O'Dixie Tennessee Walking Horse Association. He was a U. S. Navy veteran of WWII and a member and an elder of the First Presbyterian Church of DeRidder. He is survived by his wife, Carol C. Canerday of Singer; a son, Ronald D. Canerday of Calvin; daughter, Charlotte Page of Calvin; step-sons James K. "Jamie" White of DeRidder, Bill White of Singer, Robert A. "Bobby" White of Vidor, Texas and Michael T. Mrs. Sutton, the former Marjorie "Peggy" Montegut, died at 6:15 p.m. Monday, July 19, 1999 at Lafayette General Medical Center. She was a native of Reserve and the daughter of the late Majorie Henry (a native of Natchitoches) and Joseph Oswald Montegut of Laplace (former superintendent for the St. John the Baptist Parish Schools). Peggy received her BA degree in 1944 from Northwestern State College in Natchitoches, did graduate work at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., and was employed by CBS in Chicago, Ill., at Radio Station WBBM and late with WDSU in New Orleans. She retired in 1979 after 13 years as an English teacher at Northside and Acadiana High Schools in Lafayette. She was a member of the Phi Beta Fraternity (the honorary speech organization), a member of the Catholic Daughters of America for over 50 years and a member of Our Lady of Fatima, St. Mary and Holy Cross Catholic Churches in Lafayette. Survivors include her husband of 52 years, retired marine Col. Alfonse Buford Sutton of Lafayette; four daughter, Marjorie Lynn Barry of Woodland Hills, Calif., Laurie Ann Heinz of Fort Worth, Texas, Jan Elizabeth Sutton of New Orleans and Lelia Sutton Peyronnin of New Orleans; three grandchildren, Sean, Eric and Devin Barry; and one great grandchild.
