"God saw the road was getting rough, the hills were hard to climb. He gently closed his loving eyes, and whispered, 'Peace by Thine.'" Nora Listach, Jr. sunrise January 3, 1931, saw the sunset November 3, 1999. He left these lofty earthly bonds to reach out to the face of God, as he went gently into the night. He was a man for all seasons. After public school, he attended Grambling State University, holding a BS and a master's degree. He was an energetic proponent of higher education and he knew his experience in the field of education was prodigious. This man for all seasons was a teacher, coach, principal. Supervisor and administrator. He worked in the Natchitoches Parish School System for over 32 years. His influence extended far beyond the classroom and found its way into community involvement. He was the treasurer and a deacon at St. Savior Baptist Church on Cane River. He is a former member of the Natchitoches Parish Police Jury, Be-Racial Committee and the Dawn of Light #22. He was a Natchitoches Parish Hospital Board member, Boys and Girls Club Board member and a member of the Mental Health and Substance Abuse Board. So when the earthly time book closed on Nora Listach, Jr., there was little question that his life had been lived to its full potential. This man for all seasons answered the call to arms in 1952, serving during the Korean Conflict. His significant and many accomplishments had great merit; but to serve beyond the call of duty puts him in a class of righteous and draws the smile of God. Because of his strong commitment to the community, he eagerly sought avenues to help others. He did anything for anybody and was well respected and admired by all who knew him. This man for all seasons was a friend to everyone and a stranger to no one. He loved life and he lived his life "his way." He wore a smile that would electrify an entire street. He was truly and man of all seasons: a proud man, a loving husband, a devoted father and grandfather, brother, uncle, protector, confidant and friend. He would tell us today, "No sad songs for me; I am smiling in a better place. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith; henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the Righteous Judge, shall give me. His parents, Nora Listach, Sr. and Annie Lee Gillie Listach, and a sister, Audrey L. Kellis, preceded him in death. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 45 years, Mary Pearly Llorens Listach; three children, Nora Listach, III (Virginia), charlotte Ann Bushnell (Kenneth) and Patrick Listach (Lisa); one brother, John L. Listach (Edna); four sisters, Cora Fitch Kendall, Gracie G. Rucker (Daniel), Learmia L. Conerly (Richard) and Gloria L. Henderson (Freddie); 10 grandchildren, Kristen Bushnell, Kaylan Listach, Mariah Listach, Karlotta Bushnell, Hollie Listach, Jared Listach, Patrick Listach, Matthew Listach, Kari Bushnell and Blaine Listach; three brothers-in-law, Ernest Llorens (Barbara), Louis Llorens (Carolyn), Sidney Llorens (Annie); four sisters-in-law, Dorena Chevalier (Joseph), Rosa Llorens, Patricia Taylor and Sadie Metoyer (Raymond); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. The family of Nora Listach, Jr. wishes to acknowledge with grateful appreciation all the courtesies and condolences extended to them during their hour of bereavement. They ask for your continued prayers. Turner is the descendent of his great grandfather George Jones Turner (great grandmother unknown); paternal grandparents Israel "George" Jones Tuner and Francis Armstrong (Turner) (Johnson); step-grandfather Phil Johnson; a great uncle, Henry Jones Turner (who had 22 sons); parents Sam Turner, Sr. (born June 15, 1877) and Adleanor Doyle (Turner) married in 1898, the union to which seven children were born; James Turner (8/12/1899), George Turner (11/8/02), Pearline Turner (Johnson) (6/7/04), Henry "Buddy" Turner (6/6/06), Sam Turner, Jr. (3/23/08), Silas Turner (4/10/10), and Rev. Paul W. Turner, Sr. (6/10/12) the youngest of seven. The Rev. Turner was united in matrimony with Lee Ethel Johnson Dec. 11, 1933, a union to which nine children were born, Abraham, Irma Lee, Velma Lee, Paul, Jr., Odrie Lee, Ocie Lee, Daisy Mae, Wilbert and Dorothy Mae Turner. Illness claimed the life of Daisy Mae Turner at the age of 7 and Velma Lee Turner (Johnson) at the age of 34. After rearing nine children of their own and having been granted God's blessing of grace, mercy and strength, the Rev. Paul and Lee Ethel Johnson Turner assumed the responsibility of rearing their deceased daughter Velma's five young children, James Ray Johnson, 14; Debra Ann Morrow, 12; Cynthia Ann Cyiark, 10; Marcus Cyiark, 8; and Mack Earl Cyiark 5. Later they took in and reared their daughter Irma Lee's only son, Michael Johnson, 16. The Rev. and Mrs. Turner sent all the children to high school and some went to college. He leaves to mourn his wife of 66 years, Lee Ethel Johnson Turner; seven children, Abraham Turner of Compton, Calif.; Irma Lee Turner Robertson of Los Angeles, Calif.; Paul W. Turner, Jr. of Carson, Calif.; Odrie Lee Turner and Ocie Lee Turner of Natchitoches; Wilbert Turner of Campti; Dorothy Mae Turner Davis of Lancaster, Calif.; five grandchildren he and his wife reared, Sgt. James Ray Johnson of Valdosta, Ga., Debra Morrow Verin of North Hollywood, Calif., Cynthia Cyriark Burton of Compton, Calif., evangelist Marcus Cyriark, Sr. of Natchitoches, and Michael Johnson of Dolton, Ill.; daughters-in-law Inester Benjamin Turner, Kathy Turner, Marsha Turner, Elizabeth Helaire Turner, Sarah Tousaint Turner, Virgie Johnson Turner, Evelyn Diane Brown Turner and Clotine Monroe Turner; sons-in-law Emanual Johnson, Charles Robertson, Robert Mitchell, Sr., Eckard Phillips and Donald Ray Davis; sister-in-law Louvenia Cross Turner (Silas); 31 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. The Rev. Turner was born June 10, 1912 at Bermuda. Fourteen years later he began to preach the word of God when he was called by God in a vision. He has been preaching ever since, until his health failed tremendously in 1998. It is said that he has been preaching longer than any other preacher or priest in Natchitoches Parish. At the beginning of his pastoralship, he was the only preacher available to pastor at New Birth Baptist Church, a small white wood-framed building located on La. Hwy. 1 South of Natchez. The congregation stayed there until the old building was falling down; later they purchased land and built a new facility in Natchez. The Rev. Turner pastored New Birth for 54 years. Later, he was called to a dual task to pastor another church, Morning Star Baptist Church in Natchez, where he served eight years. The Rev. Turner has done many things since being born in a plantation. He has worked as a teacher, railroad man, blacksmith at a sawmill, brick laying, carpentry, sharecropper, insurance salesman, school bus driver and cooking. He served as a community organizer, a political organizer, a voter education and voter registration coordinator. The Rev. Turner, along with Dr. Ben D. Johnson, Sr. was in a leadership role when blacks were first able to vote in Natchitoches Parish. He was the first black pole watcher. He also was on officer in the Natchitoches Parish Voters and Civic League. He has held many church leadership positions such as President of Sunday School Association for 30 years; organizer of the Sunday School Congress, President of the Executive Board of New Beulah Association and President of the District Beulah Association, and many others. Rev. Turner is the patriarch of the Turner family. He has a right to say "Been there, done that," when it come to preaching. He has married over 800 couples, has baptized and buried hundreds and has been preaching the word of God for over 72 years. "I have always tried to encourage people rather than demoralizing them.
