Beck, cooper New Orleans, La., is another of the many prominent citizens of foreign birth now residing in New Orleans, who have become prominent in their different callings. He was born in Prussia, Germany in 1833, and came to the United States in 1859, landing in New Orleans. He learned his trade in the old country, and after arriving here worked only a short time as a journey-man, establishing himself in business on a small scale in 1860. His patronage increased gradually, and he is now classed among the representative business men of the city. The only time during his entire business experience that he had a partner was during 1870 and 1872. Mr. Beck is a stock-holder and vice-president of the Louisiana manufacturing and cooperage company, and is also a stockholder and president of the Union Stave company. - He is very popular with all having dealings with him and is well known throughout the state. He was elected a member of the city council in 1888. Socially he is a prominent member of the Masonic fraternity and the Knights of Honor. He was married first in New Orleans in 1862. In 1870 he was wedded to Miss Elizabeth Wolfangel. Mr. Beck's reputation as a business man is well known and is such as to warrant the implicit confidence of those with whom business relations have been established.
