Dossat., Bertie, is recognized as one of the most important and progressive factors of commercial circles in Assumption parish, La. He is a native of the city of New Orleans, born in the year 1880, and is a son of Rudolph H. and Angela (Gilly) Dossat. His father was a well-known railroad man in New Orleans, were he died in 1879; his mother had passed away in 1868. He began life as a poor boy, and at the age of seventeen years he came to Assumption parish, where he clerked a number of years and laid the foundation of his present successful career. When he had accumulated sufficient means he purchased a large stock of dry goods at Bertie, where he has since conducted a large and growing business. In 1887 he made another investment in the mercantile trade at Tallieu, La, which proved very satisfactory; after a few years, however, he sold this establishment to his brother-in-law. At Bertie he is a leading merchant, and carries a full and complete line of goods and general supplies. He was appointed postmaster by President Arthur, a position he holds at the present time. He has made a faithful and efficient officer and has given perfect satisfaction to the patrons of the office. He owns a large store-room and a residence in Bertie, and does an extensive, advancing business. In 1888 he was elected by the democratic party to represent Assumption parish in the state legislature, which he did with much credit to himself and a large constituency. He has exhibited marked capabilities in the management of the affairs of state, and has won an enviable reputation which will ensure his return should he desire to enter the race again. In 1882 Mr. Dossat was married to Miss L. A. Tallieu, a daughter of Emile J. and Amelia (Bourgeois) Tallieu. Two sons were born to Mr. and Mrs. Dossat. The mother died December 14, 1890, deeply mourned by her family and a wide circle of friends. The parents and children are members of the Roman Catholic church. Mr. Dossat belongs to the Knights of Honor and the Knights of Pythias, being district deputy grand chancellor of the latter lodge. Biographical and Historical Memoires of Louisiana, (vol. 1), p. 382.
