The founder of the business of this company, F. Fischer, now practically retired from business, is one of the oldest lumbermen of this vicinity. He has been in the trade since 1865, and although he started in a modest way, with resources that are indicated by the name of the establishment, had meanwhile acquired a very large business. He was originally from Prussia, Germany, born in 1818, and was educated in his native country. He came to New Orleans in 1839, connected himself with the lumber and shingle business before the war, and as above stated, established this mill in 1865. Four of his sons succeeded him in business: Cooney B., Theodore J., Emile 0. and Joe L. The sons are all natives of New Orleans. Their father retired in 1884 and sold the entire business to his sons. They have their own timber lands in Louisiana and Mississippi, and have in the cypress swamps of this vicinity a large force of men getting out material for their mill in New Orleans. The Picayune mill is situated on the river bank at the foot of Carrollton avenue, in the Seventh district of New Orleans. The premises occupied are large and commodious, the buildings and yards covering an area of over four entire squares of ground, and are supplied with every facility for carrying on this special line of business. Their trade extends all over the country and to foreign markets. They have an abundant supply of the largest and best cypress logs ever brought to this or to any other market, and their stock consists of the largest assortment of cypress lumber in the Southern states. The firm will be pleased to quote prices upon application. They are prepared to do all kinds of sawing on short notice and on the most reasonable terms. Over 200 hands are constantly employed in the various departments of their business; their annual transactions amount to over 10,000,000 feet of lumber. From the foregoing account of this concern it will be readily seen that Fischer Lumber & Manufacturing company, limited, have ample capital, credit and resources with which to compete for city or country trade. A long and honorable career under the management of the elder Fischer is surety for all transactions with the house, which will be discovered to be one of the most accommodating and satisfactory in its line to have dealings with. The elder Fischer was formerly a director in the Germania bank, and the Teutonia Insurance company. He is a prominent member of the Mechanic, Dealer & Lumber exchange. He never took a very active part in politics, but attended strictly to business. Biographical and Historical Memoires of Louisiana, (vol. 1), p. 415.
