He rose from just a messenger boy to President and Manager of D. H. Holmes Department Store. He started his career when he was fourteen, just out of grammar school, on April 30, 1894. He was paid two dollars a week and thought himself very lucky. After nine weeks he was promoted to three dollars as Office Boy. He advanced quickly and when one of the two bookkeepers resigned a few years later Lienhard was given his job, though he was only seventeen. He worked longer hours than the other bookkeeper so as to be able to keep up with him as he was very experienced. He became very quick and is still very good in addition. This job paid fifteen dollars, but when he proved that he was capable of holding it his salary was raised to $19.00 dollars. Mr. Lienhard says he has always prepared himself for the next promotion, and he has also trained the man behind him to take his place. His next promotion was to Office Manager. He was doing so well then that he married. He was then promoted to assistant credit manager and he was also office supervisor. Next he was made credit manager and he still held the position of office supervisor. A few years later Mr. Lienhard was made assistant secretary and assistant treasurer. He was Mr. _. W. Evans, the general manager's right-hand man until he died in 1937. Mr. Lienhard was then elected president and general manager of D. H. Holmes Co. It is men like Mr. Lienhard that we are proud to have as leaders of our community.
