All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** The Otis Manufacturing company is the only concern in New Orleans or the South engaged in the importation of mahogany, and was established into a stock company by Henry Otis in 1886. Mr. Otis was for many years connected with the timber trade in New Orleans, but prior to that time was interested in the manufacture of boxes of all descriptions, and the establishment with which he was connected did the most extensive and paying business ever done in the city. It gave employment to 150 men, and was in operation night and day. Henry Otis was born in Yarmouth, Mass., and died on August 8,1891, at which time he was fifty-two years of age. When a boy of fourteen he left home and went to sea, and followed this life until he attained his majority, visiting all the principal countries of the globe.
