Girod Street Cemetery of New Orleans Lousiana Submitted by Doris Ryan January 2003 ********************************************** Copyright. All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Today my husband and I visited Hope Mausoleum, 4841 Canal St., New Orleans, where remains from the Girod Street Cemetery were re-interred after the latter was deconsecrated in 1957. There are in-ground burials and above-ground tombs here, as well as vaulted crypts. A gentleman in the office informed us that the remains from Girod were placed collectively in drums and buried beneath the mausoleum building. He led us to a commemorative plaque marking the event; and further down that hall to Crypt #1083-A (bottom row by the windows) where the surnames of those who had been interred in Girod are listed. On the commemorative plaque, in a cross-walk: In loving memory of those once interred in the Girod Street Cemetery (founded 1822), whose mortal remains were removed and re-entombed in this building by Christ Church Cathedral (Episcopal) A.D. 1957, and of Rev. James F. Hull DD, 1776-1833, rector of Christ Church 1816-1830 Rev. Wm. T. Leacock DD, 1797-1884, rector of Christ Church 1852-1882 Richard Relf 1776-1857, a warden of Christ Church for 52 years. Rev. John Henry Kleinhagen, 1815-1885, pioneer Evangelical & Lutheran pastor Glendy Burke 1806 -1879, merchant, banker, leading citizen Jane Placide, 1804-1835, distinguished actress whose remains lie in Crypt 1083-A. I (possibly meant to be "Aye"), Tis a holy rite in remembrance of the dead that will not let oblivion blight around the grave be shed.
