Before my time my Great Grandfather Mazzuri had a tailor shop in the F.M. That certainly wouldn't have fit in the l920's. My other GG, Duvic, had a blacksmith shop and carriage business at 716-24 Hospital St. - now Gov. Nicholls St. - that he bought in 1872. On these three lots were two two-story brick buildings that formed a U, It was erroneously called "The Spanish Stables" by tour guides, etc - erroneously because they didn't exist at the time of the Spanish reign. On the second floor of these buildings were living quarters and I have an idea that tailor Mazzuri and his daughter Marie - who became my grandmother - rented space there. And what would be more natural than to have her marry the landlord's son? If some generous and capable lister could check the l880 census for occupants at that address I would be ever-so grateful. In l962 the property was bought and developed by Clay Shaw into twelve luxury apartments with a swimming pool in the middle of the "U". (New Orleanians on the list will remember that name in connection with the President Kennedy murder.) Five years ago I visited Mr. Roland A. Chiara and his wife Bonnie who owned the property at that time. If they're still there I feel sure they would permit visitors given the proper approach For a little background: "The property was acquired from Joseph, Mark, Angele, Marie Joseph and Marie Pascale Duplessis, wife of Antoine Villars, on January ll and March 22, l830, by act passed before Notary Public Felix DeArmas.. The act stated that the said Duplessis vendors "all free persons of color" inherited the property from their father, Joseph Duplessis, who acquired it on December l, l804.." Vic Jackson, MS 392ll
