For the fiscal year through July 31, earnings were up 68 percent. Stewart said Tuesday that it earned $3.5 million or 35 cents a share on revenue of $38.5 million in the third quarter of its 1991-92 fiscal year. In the same quarter a year ago, the company earned 2.5 million or 36 cents a share on revenue of $36.7 million. Per share performance reflects a 43 percent increase in the number of shares outstanding. The company said the profit gains came from its core businesses and contributions from four new acquisitions. The company has made seven acquisitions of funeral homes or cemeteries in this fiscal year. Also, interest costs were nearly halved. At the same time, the company expects damage from Hurricane Andrew to its funeral home in Kendall, Fla., south of Miami, will not cost more than 5 cents a share. For the first three quarters of its fiscal year, Stewart earned $11.1 million or $1.12 a share on revenues of $114.1 million, compared with earnings of $6.6 million or 95 cents a share on revenues of $102.8 million. Stewart closed Tuesday at $19, down 3/4, in national over-the-counter trading.
