The court ordered an injunction to issue restraining the keeper of this lock-up from receiving or confining in the said lock-up any prisoners until the further order of the court. Cyrille Labiche, f.m.c, vs. State of Louisiana. This was a suite by the owner for the freedom of two slaves, Adele and Marie Louise, under the new law which requires actions for the emancipation of slaves to be brought against the State, and to be conducted contradictorily with it before a jury. Verdict granting freedom to the slaves with the privilege of remaining in the State. Sixth District Court - Judge Cotton - Mandamus - Coroner Forshee yesterday took a rule on the City Controller to show cause why a peremptory mandamus should not issue commanding him to audit the Coroner's bills for holding inquests at the rate of $17 per inquest, notwithstanding the late ordinance of the city reducing the rate of charges allowed by the Coroner, on the ground that this ordinance was illegal. The court dismissed the rule, holding that the Coroner's remedy was by direct action and not by rule.
