Roane Jr., a longtime reporter for The Times-Picayune, died of a heart attack at his Gretna home Saturday. He was 67. Roane retired from the newspaper in 1991 after a 30-year career of covering everything from the courts to the police to the ports to the public library system. He was known in the newsroom for his unfailing cheerfulness and friendliness. "Art was invariably nice," said Bob Ussery, a colleague and close friend. "He was always making puns and jokes." Roane in 1974 shared a first-prize award from the New Orleans Press Club for an article on an alleged plot to assassinate President Nixon. He received a merit award from the Young Men's Business Club in 1966 for several stories about the plight of a sick club member who needed financial assistance. Roane often looked for opportunities to write about Mexico, the native land of his wife, Virginia. When a female writer in 1971 complained that Tijuana looked seedy on a recent trip, Roane fired back: "My hope is that when those who know, respect and love Mexico speak on behalf of that nation, she (the writer) will pause long enough to hear them out. She may learn something." Roane was born in Tarrytown, N.Y., and raised in New York City. A graduate of North Carolina State University, he got his first job as a reporter in 1954 at The Valley News in New Hampshire. After working at several other newspapers, he came to The Times-Picayune in 1961. Besides his wife, Roane is survived by three children: David of Baton Rouge, April and Arthur III of Gretna; and a sister, Caryl R. Dolan of Wallkill, N.Y. A wake is scheduled today from 6 to 9 p.m. at Mothe Funeral Home in Harvey. A funeral is scheduled for Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Mothe. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery in Gretna.
