Thomas Francis Mulcrone, S.J., a Catholic priest and professor emeritus of mathematics at Loyola University's City College, died Friday of a heart attack at Mercy+Baptist Medical Center. He was 83. Father Mulcrone was born in Chicago and grew up there and in Florida. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1932 at St. Charles College in Grand Coteau and was ordained in 1946 in St. Mary, Kan. He received a bachelor's degree from Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala., a master's degree in mathematics form Catholic University in Washington, D.C., and a licentiate in sacred theology from St. Louis University. During a 56-year career as an educator, he taught at St. Louis University, St. Charles College, Jesuit High School in Tampa, Fla., and Spring Hill College, where he spent 23 years. He first taught at Loyola in 1956-60 and returned in 1975 as an assistant professor of mathematics. He was named an assistant professor emeritus in 1986. Father Mulcrone was an auxiliary chaplain for the Air Force in Mobile in the early 1960s. He spent much time ministering to convents and homes for the elderly and maintained a keen interest in the careers of his former students. He was active in the Mathematical Association of America and the Association of College Teachers of Mathematics. He published 24 papers on topics in the history of math and science. Survivors include nieces and nephews. A vigil service will be held today at 7 p.m. at Ignatius Chapel in Loyola's Bobet Hall. A Mass will be said Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 6363 St. Charles Ave. Burial will be in Spring Hill College Cemetery.
