Former St. Bernard Official Roland Bergeron Dies At 76 Times Picayune 12-9-1996 ************************************************* Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ************************************************ Roland Joseph Bergeron Jr., a longtime elected official and former member of the St. Bernard Parish Police Jury in the 1960s and 1970s, died Friday from complications of Parkinson's disease at Chalmette Medical Center. He was 76. Mr. Bergeron was also the retired chairman of Bergeron Industries, a company he founded that became one of the state's largest barge builders in the early 1980s. Among its many projects was the Steamboat Natchez. Mr. Bergeron's political career began in 1964 when he was elected to the St. Bernard Democratic Executive Committee. During the same period, he was also the chairman of the St. Bernard Water District No. 2. In 1968, Mr. Bergeron won election to the Police Jury. He won re-election twice, in 1972 and 1976. During his tenure on the Police Jury, he served as vice president and president. A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army's 78th Infantry Division, he received the Purple Heart for injuries he sustained while crossing the Remagen Bridge in Germany. Mr. Bergeron was a lifelong resident of St. Bernard Parish. He attended Joseph Maumus High School and was a graduate of Delgado Community College and was a former vice president of the Thebian Fraternity. He is survived by his wife, Helen Tirres Bergeron; three sons, William T., Todd A. and Roland J. Bergeron III; a sister, Maude Bergeron Lewis; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A funeral will be held today at 11 a.m. at St. Bernard Funeral Home, 3710 Paris Road. Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. today at the funeral home.
