Professor And Psychiatrist Edward C. Norman, 83, Dies Times Picayune 12-20-1996 ************************************************* Copyright. Norman, a retired doctor, psychiatrist and educator, died Wednesday of congestive heart failure at Memorial Medical Center. He was 83. Dr. Norman was born in Vanderhoof, British Columbia, and lived in New Orleans since 1953. From 1953 to 1993, he was in the private practice of psychiatry in New Orleans. He graduated from the University of Washington and received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a master of public health degree from Tulane University. He was a psychiatric resident at Pennsylvania Hospital and Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago and did graduate training at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis. He was in the Navy Public Health Service during World War II. Dr. Norman was a psychiatrist in Chicago and a clinical instructor of psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago, 1949-53; an assistant professor of clinical psychiatry at Tulane School of Medicine, 1953-60; a professor of psychiatry and preventive medicine at Tulane, 1964-72; head of the mental health section in the public health administration department at the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, 1967-71; director of the community mental health section in the health services administration department at the School of Public Health, 1971-79; associate director of the pain rehabilitation unit at Hotel Dieu Hospital, 1978-93; and an emeritus professor at the School of Public Health since 1979. He also was a former senior visiting doctor at Charity Hospital, on the adjunct staff of DePaul Hospital and Hotel Dieu, and affiliated with the Vocational Rehabilitation Institute at Charity. Dr. Norman was a former president of Administrative Learning Procedures Inc. and vice president of the Louisiana Executive Service Corps. He was a member of the Audubon Golf Club and many professional organizations. Survivors include his wife, June Morris Norman; a son, Donald M. Norman of Seattle; two daughters, Sharon Norman Rodrigue of Los Angeles and Cathy Norman Penland; and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m.
