Raphael, a retired lawyer and former president of the Academy of New Orleans Trial Lawyers, died Wednesday of cancer at his home in Scottsdale, Ariz. He was 68. Mr. Raphael practiced law in New Orleans for 34 years until retiring in 1993. He created and produced the first live call-in public access television show on the law, "Sherman Raphael's Law Week," which ran for three years on Cox Cable. In 1986, he was a candidate for a Civil District Court judgeship. Mr. Raphael was born in New Haven, Conn., and lived in New Orleans for many years before moving to Scottsdale. He was a graduate of Tulane University and the Tulane School of Law. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Raphael was appointed to the Federal Bar Association's National Council in 1971. He also was circuit vice president for the 5th Circuit and president of the New Orleans chapter in 1973-74. In 1986, he received the association's Earl W. Kitner Distinguished Leadership Award. He was president of the Academy of New Orleans Trial Lawyers in 1972-73 and national president of the Tulane Law Alumni Association in 1977-78. He was a former worshipful master of Jefferson Lodge No. 191 F.&.A.M. He also was a member of the New Orleans Scottish Rite Bodies, the Jerusalem Temple Shrine, the Maritime Square Club, the Crescent City Coin Club, the American and Canadian numismatic associations, the Jewish Chautauqua Society and Phi Alpha Delta International Law Fraternity. He was a former president of the Second Bayou Investment Club and former member of the Upper Pontalba Commission. Mr. Raphael was a member of Temple Sinai and a brotherhood vice president during 1983-92. He was a former president of Congregation Chevra Thilim, the Chevra Kadisha Burial Society and the Ahavos Sholem Cemetery Association. Survivors include his wife, Audrey Lehman Sternberg; a daughter, Rachelle Raphael of Washington, D.C.; a stepdaughter, Annfaye Sternberg Milkes of Dallas; four stepsons, Jack and Tom Sternberg of New Orleans and Manfred and Paul Sternberg of Houston; a sister, Gladys Thomas of New Orleans; and four stepgrandchildren. A funeral will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Temple Sinai, 6227 St. Charles Ave. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Hebrew Rest Mausoleum.
