Shushan, a real estate lawyer who represented major developers in New Orleans for many years, died Sunday of cancer at his home. He was 66. "He was possessed of the highest legal acumen I know of," said Jacqueline McPherson, one of his longtime law partners. "I never heard of anybody with greater legal knowledge." She said Mr. Shushan represented local and out-of-town developers, helping them to obtain financing as well as providing legal advice. Among the projects he was involved in were the luxury apartment complex at 1750 St. Charles Ave. and the West Bank subdivision Terrytown. Mr. Shushan practiced law for 42 years and worked for the same firm, Shushan, Jackson and McPherson, since 1955, said Carol Lazaro, his secretary for 30 years. "He never missed work, until this last illness," she said. "He loved the office." Mr. Shushan was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He graduated from Isidore Newman School, the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Finance and Harvard Law School. He was past president of Lakewood Country Club, general chairman of the Greater New Orleans Open golf tournament and a member of Touro Synagogue, the American Land Title Association-Lenders Counsel Group and the American College of Real Estate Lawyers. Mr. Shushan was generous with his time, Lazaro said. "He was very kind- hearted. He gave to a lot of charities and was always there for you if you needed help." And he loved sports, Lazaro said. "He especially loved golf and football," she said. "And he had sports friends like (former Green Bay Packer stars) Paul Hornung and Max McGee." "Work and sports, it was his life," said Rader Jackson, another of Mr. Shushan's law partners. Survivors include two daughters, Debbie S. Zeligson of Tulsa, Okla., and Alexa Shushan of Los Angeles. A funeral will be held today at 1 p.m. at Bultman Funeral Home, 3338 St. Charles Ave. Burial will be in Chevra Thilim Cemetery.
