Wingerter, a retired 2nd City Court judge, died Monday of a heart attack during a meeting at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church Hall in Algiers. He was 79. Judge Wingerter was a lifelong resident of Algiers. He was a graduate of Jesuit High School, received a bachelor's degree from Loyola University in 1938 and was a 1940 graduate of Loyola School of Law. He served as legal counsel for the Louisiana State Police and was an adjunct professor at Loyola School of Law. He was a member of Alpha Sigma Nu Honor Society, Louisiana Bar Association, Santa Maria Knights of Columbus Council No. 1724, the Red Cross, Kiwanis Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Post No. 218. He was a founding member of the Krewe of Janus. He was a Navy veteran and served as a full lieutenant on a submarine chaser in the Pacific Theater throughout World War II. Survivors include his wife, Betty Jane Roden Wingerter; two sons, Donald Strachan and Martin John Wingerter; a brother, Warren Wallace Wingerter; a sister, Sister Vera Marie Wingerter, O.S.U.; and two grandchildren. A Mass will be said Thursday at 11 a.m. at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church in Algiers. Visitation will be today from 6 to 9 p.m. and Thursday beginning at 9 a.m. at Mothe Funeral Home, 1300 Vallette St., Algiers. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park in Gretna.
