Charbonnet, a businessman and civic leader, died Tuesday of a heart attack at his home. He was 74. Mr. Charbonnet was the founder of American Rent All Inc., a real estate agent and most recently managing partner of Dorsey Dental Group of Louisiana. He was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He graduated from Jesuit High School and Loyola University and was a lieutenant in the Navy Reserve during World War II. Active in the Catholic Church, Mr. Charbonnet was a member of the Committee for the Papal Visit, the development board of St. Joseph's Abbey and the boards of the Catholic Foundation of the Archdiocese, Maison Hospitaliere, St. Elizabeth's Home and Dominican College. He was a parishioner of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church and attended the Manresa Retreat House for 37 years. He was lieutenant of honor of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, past president of the Serra Club and a member of the Hospitalier of St. Lazarus, the Knights of Malta, the Lotus Club and the Society of the War of 1812. He was named Jesuit's Alumnus of the Year, was honored by the Institute of Human Understanding and received the Order of St. Louis medallion, the Volunteer Activist award and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation's Living and Giving Award. Survivors include his wife, Adelaide Tutt Charbonnet; three sons, William Tutt, Donald Gilbert and Clayton Joseph Charbonnet Jr.; five daughters, Adelaide C. O'Connor, Suzanne C. Colledge, Lisette A. Charbonnet, Ninette C. Eastman and Alice C. Thornhill; a brother, Robert H. Charbonnet; two sisters, Audrey Ward of Birmingham, Ala., and Elsie Flower; and 27 grandchildren. A Mass will be said today at noon at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 6367 St. Charles Ave. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Metairie Cemetery. Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
