Sorci, retired owner of Sorci Sand Co., died Wednesday of complications from a stroke at his home. He was 88. Mr. Sorci was born in New Orleans and lived in St. Bernard Parish for the past 20 years. Mr. Sorci was a hauling contractor in New Orleans and surrounding parishes. He revolutionized the sand industry by being the first to pump "sugar sand" - a fine-grain sand on the river bottom - from the Mississippi River into batture pits. Survivors include his wife, Ethel Andrews Sorci; three daughters, Mary Gay Sorci Thomas of Winston-Salem, N.C., Barbara Sorci Marshall and Elizabeth Sorci Hunter; a sister, Antoinette Theresa Sorci; and five grandchildren. A Mass will be said today at 1:30 p.m. at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Metairie Cemetery.
