All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ************************************************ Edward Butts Poitevent, a local lawyer who reigned as King of Carnival in 1984 and was one of the original owners of the New Orleans Saints Football Partnerships, died Sunday at his home. He was 83. Born in New Orleans and a resident of Mandeville for many years, Mr. Poitevent was a partner in the law firm of Jones Walker Waechter Poitevent Carrere and Denegre. He played football at Tulane University and was a member of the first Sugar Bowl team in 1934. A 1931 graduate of the New Orleans Academy, he obtained his law degree at Tulane University, where he was a member and president of Kappa Alpha Order. At the beginning of his career, Mr. Poitevent was employed in the legal department of Sun Oil Co. in Lafayette and Beaumont, Texas. From 1942 to 1946, he served in the Navy, retiring with the rank of lieutenant commander. He received the Pacific Theater Ribbon with a Battle Star and the First Marine Presidential Unit Citation. In 1948, Mr. Poitevent became an associate with the law firm of Jones Walker, known today as Jones Walker Waechter Poitevent Carrere and Denegre. Active in numerous local, state and national civic and professional organizations, he was chairman of the Collins Diboll Foundation and the American Cancer Society of Greater New Orleans and the State of Louisiana. He was also president of the New Orleans Bar Association. In addition, Mr. Poitevent was a vestryman and senior warden of Christ Church Cathedral and a former board member of Covenant Home for the Aged, the Charles and Elizabeth Wetmore Foundation, Tulane University's President's Council and Junior Achievement. In 1984 Mr. Poitevent was selected as Rex. Survivors include his wife, Bruce Blakemore Poitevent; and his brother. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Christ Church Cathedral, 2919 St. Charles Ave. Lakelawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
